Once you arrive at Garland Lodge & Golf Resort, your tee shots are the only drives you’ll make the entire time you’re there. That’s because everything at the resort – the five golf courses, the four distinctive dining venues, the variety of places to stay – it’s all within walking distance or a short golf cart ride away.
There are larger golf resorts around the country, although not many, given that Garland now has 82 holes! However, none have a golfer-friendly layout quite like Garland, where each course operates from the same pro shop. Where each meal is just steps away. Whether you choose to stay in the Main Lodge, a villa with one to four bedrooms, or an on-course condominium or golf cottage, each of the 350-plus guest rooms at Garland comes with a fridge, coffee maker and coffee, flat-screen TV and an ironing board so you can at least look like a pro. Plus, each bathroom is stocked with amenities, just in case you forget to pack your own. The villas, condos and cottages also include features such as living areas, patios, decks with grills, fully-equipped kitchens, laundry rooms, fireplaces and jacuzzi tubs. And they’re all within walking distance of the golf shop.

Once you’re dressed and looking like a tour player, you can walk to the golf shop that operates all five courses at Garland – Fountains, Monarch, Reflections, Swampfire and The Sawyer. Each 18-hole course begins and ends right there, and each one weaves through the resort’s 3,000 acres of unspoiled Michigan wilderness full of rolling meadows, lakes, streams, mature hardwoods, towering pines and no small amount of wildlife.
Whether you play in the morning or afternoon, there’s often time for more golf in the day. And since everything is close together at Garland, you can always head back to your room for a siesta and then walk back for another round later on. The practice green and driving range are both right there by the golf shop. And the resort’s newest course, The Sawyer, takes only about an hour to play. The reversible-loop short course has 9 or 10 holes, depending on the day, and none longer than 118 yards.

Whenever you’re done golfing for the day, there’s post-round food and drink available right off the final green at Antler’s, Tamarack or the Tiki Bar. Each dining venue has its own one-of-a-kind vibe, from an outdoor bar with fun cocktails on the patio to an indoor grill with TVs all over the walls and a bevy of beers on tap to a dining room with ambience that pairs well with a bottle of wine. The seasonal menus at each are sublime, with simple pleasures such as wood-fired pizza and chicken wings as well as chef specials featuring elk, salmon and other northern Michigan delicacies.
After you’ve had your fill of golf, grub and grog, the commute back to your room is measured in steps, not miles, and takes just seconds. Ditto for other evening extracurriculars. (There are tennis courts and an outdoor swimming pool on site!)
